Starting in Prague, the route heads north through the Bohemian countryside, picking up the Elbe river at Mělník (where it meets the Vltava). From there it follows the Elbe downstream through industrial Ústí nad Labem, into the dramatic Bohemian Switzerland sandstone landscape, and crosses the German border near Bad Schandau. The final German stretch through Saxon Switzerland leads directly into Dresden.
