Prague to Vienna by Bike 320 km · 7–8 days · Two countries, two rivers, one great journey
From the golden spires of Prague to the grand boulevards of Vienna — cycling through South Bohemian countryside, the UNESCO town of Český Krumlov, and the legendary Wachau Valley vineyards. One of the great point-to-point bike tours of Central Europe.
The route starts in Prague and follows the Vltava river south through Bohemia, passing through Písek, Český Krumlov (UNESCO), and České Budějovice. At the Austrian border it joins the Danube cycle path (EuroVelo 6), one of Europe's most famous cycling routes, and follows the river through Linz and the Wachau Valley into Vienna.
Why Cycle Prague to Vienna?
Start in golden Prague, finish in imperial Vienna — two of Europe's most beautiful cities as your bookends.
The Czech section climaxes at a baroque UNESCO World Heritage town that stops cyclists in their tracks.
Cycle through terraced vineyards above the Danube in harvest season — with tastings at every village.
The Austrian section follows EuroVelo 6: flat, well-paved, perfectly signposted, cycle-friendly all the way.
Route Highlights
Day-by-Day Route Breakdown
Leave Prague along the Vltava valley on quiet bike paths and country roads. Písek has a 13th-century stone bridge — the oldest in Bohemia.
Rolling Bohemian countryside leads to the jewel of the Czech section: a UNESCO baroque town that stops everyone in their tracks.
Short day — explore Krumlov castle in the morning. České Budějovice is the home of Budvar (Budweiser Budvar) brewery.
Cross into Austria and join the Danube at Linz. Terrain flattens noticeably. Linz is a modern art city with a lively old town.
Full day on the Danube cycle path — flat, paved, beautiful. Melk Monastery perched above the river marks the gateway to the Wachau.
The crown jewel: Wachau Valley. Vineyards, castles, apricot orchards. Short distance — take your time and stop for wine tasting.
Final day along the Danube into Vienna. The city cycling infrastructure is excellent. Arrive at the Ringstrasse, Stephansdom — your call.
